49ers QB Trey Lance takes criticism from teammates

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has been making headlines during the 2023 NFL offseason. He is trying to claim the starting quarterback job for the 2023 season after injuring his ankle in Week 2 of the 2022 season and missing the rest of the season because of it.

Trey Lance has received a ton of criticism from his teammates this offseason about his maturity and leadership. Veterans like George Kittle want a Super Bowl title as soon as possible. The San Francisco 49ers are in win-now mode.

They haven’t bonded with him much off the court this offseason and have bonded more off the court with quarterback Sam Darnold. They were hanging out with him at the Golden State Warriors game and his teammates are looking at him as the potential starting quarterback this season if Brock Purdy isn’t ready to come in Week 1 for the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jose Luis Sanchez III, Lance is beloved in the 49ers locker room. As a person, not as a player. When he was absent from an NBA playoff game his teammates attended, many assumed he wasn’t invited because they didn’t like him. This was not the case:

Trey is loved in our locker room, Juszczyk said. Everyone loves Trey. The guy really works his ass. He is super nice. He’s a very popular guy. So for some reason he wasn’t at the basketball game, it’s not because we don’t like him.

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers have fallen for the selection of Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft at North Dakota State. One can also wonder if they didn’t give him a chance since Lance is only 23 years old.

As a person, he doesn’t mind San Francisco 49ers teammates. As a footballer, it’s a whole different story. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan knows who the starting quarterback in Week 1 will be. The only way Trey Lance can win the starting job is if he’s absolutely perfect during training camp and preseason games. If he’s just average, Lance probably won’t see the pitch at all in 2023.

If everyone is healthy, Brock Purdy will be the starter and Sam Darnold will be the backup. Trey Lance will be the third quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He has a lot of work to do to convince the organization and he must do it quickly.
