Rep. Chris Stewart questioned Maya Wiley, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, during a House court hearing Thursday on government censorship of social media.
The committee also invited Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to testify on the matter, prompting pushback from Democratic lawmakers.
Do you trust the government to determine what facts and viewpoints the American people should be exposed to? Stewart, a Republican who represents Utah’s 2nd District, asked Wiley.
I am not aware of any government action that tells the American public what facts they should be exposed to, she said.
You are not aware of this? He asked. Oh my God, where have you been living for the past three years?
He then asked if it was good for the governments of countries like Iran and Russia to suppress free speech, to which Wiley replied no.
After some back and forth, Wiley said it was unconstitutional to pass laws that would censor free speech. Stewart responded by saying that laws are not necessary for censorship.
Vladimir Putin does not pass laws, he asserts his strength and his influence to suppress freedom of expression, he declared. After concluding that you are unaware of the suppression of free speech in recent years, do you think it was appropriate for the FBI to pressure private companies to censor and remove posts the government disagreed with?
Wiley said there are instances of criminal prosecution when US officials can ask news agencies to help protect the integrity of the investigation.
Stewart completed his remarks by asking if it was right for the government to try to suppress Hunter Bidens’ laptop information.
Does it bother you that 51 former intelligence officials determined that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation? Let them admit, by the way, that they have no proof that it was true.
Wiley answered the question by talking about censorship under the Trump administration.
Democrats Object to Testimony of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy also testified at the hearing, after Democrats expressed anger over his invitation to address the committee.
Democrats like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., have called him an unfactual conspiracy theorist.
At the start of the hearing, Wasserman Schultz made a motion to move Kennedy’s testimony to closed session.
Mr Kennedy repeatedly made despicable anti-Semitic and anti-Asian comments just last week, she said.
She referenced a recorded video where Kennedy made misleading claims about who was most likely to fall ill with COVID-19, as first reported by the New York Post.
Kyle Herrig, executive director of the Congressional Integrity Project, which is aligned with Democrats, sent a letter asking House committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to disinvite Kennedy from the hearing.
Kennedy and the Republicans push back on censorship
Kennedy defended himself during the hearing, saying that in his entire life he had never uttered a racist or anti-Semitic phrase. He added that he was a lifelong defender of Israel.
But I am censured here through this target, through slander, through misinterpretations of what I said, through lies, through associations, he said.
Kennedy tried to blame it on himself to focus on government influence on Big Tech.
The term misinformation was coined to describe information that Facebook and Twitter and other social media sites understood to be true, but which the White House and other federal agencies wanted to censor anyway for political reasons because it challenged official orthodoxies, he said.
During his weekly press conference, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y., questioned why Kennedy was given a platform to spew his hatred.
Here is the answer: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a living, breathing false flag operation.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters on Monday that he disagreed with Kennedy’s portrayal of COVID-19.
The hearing we have this week is about censorship. I don’t think censoring someone is actually the answer here, he said.
