Another wave of racist flyers hits the Auburn area

July 23, 1993

Racist flyers again found their way into the newspaper tubes and mailboxes of city and county officials and other area residents.

Police are investigating the incident, but still do not know who is responsible.

The unsigned flyers, depicting derogatory images of African Americans, mock the upcoming Multicultural Day and deride it as a “Harriet Tubman lookalike contest.”

The incident puts salt in old wounds reopened last month when similar leaflets were distributed.

These new flyers were mailed, postmarked Syracuse, to city and county officials. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office reports that others were found in newspaper tubes along Franklin Street Road, Melrose Road and West Genesee Street.

Auburn Police Chief John Ecklund said his department is reviewing the situation, but is “not certain at this time if there is a violation of the law.” The contents of the flyers are protected by First Amendment rights.

Ecklund said he didn’t know who was responsible. The leaflets were signed by factional groups bearing incendiary names. Ecklund said it is unclear if this event is linked to last month’s episode in which neo-Nazi leaflets were distributed in the area.
