The son of Red Sox legend Manny Ramirez knows how to swing a bat, but that’s not what irks former Boston teammate Jeff Frye.
Boston Red Sox legend Manny Ramirez is raising his son to follow in his footsteps, except for the celebration part.
Ramirez’s son, Luca Ramirez, recently made headlines for a stunning performance in the 2023 World Wood Bat Association (WWBA) Semi-Finals. On Monday, he hit a home run to send his team to the championship game, and he celebrated like any testosterone-fueled high school athlete would, with squats, shouts, handshakes and a choreographed dance surrounded by his teammates. .
For former Red Sox slugger Jeff Frye, that was too much.
Frye never played with Manny Ramirez, as the two former Boston players barely missed each other at Fenway Park. But Frye played against Ramirez during Frye’s eight-year MLB career, and according to Frye, Manny Ramirez never, not once, celebrated as much as his son.
Frye called out Luca Ramirez on Twitter for his bad sportsmanship and over-celebration:
Former Boston Red Sox slugger hits out Manny Ramirez’s son for homer celebration
Manny Ramirez, a member of the elite 500-home run and 12-time All-Star, was absolutely beloved in Boston, and anything he or his family does will likely draw positive reviews from Red Sox fans.
Ramirez played for Boston for nearly a decade, hitting .312 and becoming one of the deadliest bats of his era. Some of his talent may have been passed on to his son, whose stance and home plate differs from his father’s, but who may have the same keen eye for homer breaking.
However, Luca Ramirez has clearly gotten on the wrong side of Jeff Frye – Frye has always commented that young Ramirez has a “bright future” ahead of him, but he has warned him against acting so “foolish” on the baseball field again.
The rest of the baseball community hasn’t paid as much attention to Luca Ramirez’s celly. One pundit called him the Juan Soto 2.0, which of course is ridiculous. He’s only in high school and has just committed to Tennessee, Class of 2024. Luca Ramirez could find even more success with the Vols, but there’s no need to place expectations on him now. If he looks like his dad, he’ll be fine.
