Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is facing backlash over new standards for African-American history that say he has nothing to do with it.
According to the governor of Florida, the standards came from the Florida Department of Education.
The reviews begin with the section of the syllabus which reads: “The slaves developed skills which, in some cases, could be applied to their personal advantage”.
Dr. William Allen was part of the group that developed the new Florida standards.
“It is true that Africans were resourceful, resilient and adaptive and were able to develop skills and abilities, which served to their advantage, both during and after slavery,” Allen said.
Thomas Breslin, a politics professor at Florida International University, said the controversy could spell disaster for the DeSantis campaign.
“I think the governor is making a political mistake, with terrible repercussions in society, by standing up on this critical / anti-critical theory of race, the anti-Woke crusade in which he finds himself. He’s just disqualifying himself,” Breslin said.
