Fred Toucher on WFAN reviews: The New York Post is not a real newspaper

When New York Post opinion columnist Phil Mushnick wrote a review of a segment on WFAN’s morning show, Boomer & Gio, it caught the attention of the sports media. Mushnick lamented that Gregg Giannotti and update presenter Jerry Recco (replacing Boomer Esiason) struck up a conversation about genitals. In his column, he claimed that the station did not consider its listeners intelligent enough to be able to tell the gross from the intelligent or the sporty from gastric flatulence noises.

Mushnick took umbrage at the conversation, which ironically stemmed from an article that the New York Post, the very outlet he writes for, ran an exclusive story. Sports Illustrated columnist Jimmy Traina offered his thoughts on the entire ordeal, essentially calling Mushnick and The Post hypocrites. Even before giving their opinion, Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, Mass. have read various titles published by the newspaper over the years. The venture was a purported effort to demonstrate the joking and crudeness of newspapers used to generate engagement.

Osama bin Wankin. Beet the Meatles. And then of course there was when Ike Turner died with the highly inappropriate, Ike Turner beats Tina to death!, Shertenlieb recited on air.

The show then read the litany of headlines the newspaper wrote about Anthony Weiner, a disgraced politician who was embroiled in sexual harassment scandals that forced him to resign from Congress and stand for election. Essentially, the headlines embody what the show was trying to say about the New York Post and how it differs from other newspapers.

You write for shit, Toucher told Mushnick. The Post is shit it’s not a real newspaper. Nobody has the illusion that The Post is a real newspaper. It’s funny it’s a joke. First, The Post is five pages, and second, its nonsense.

In his column, Mushnick shot Esiason when he wasn’t even involved in the incident calling him a fake layman who plays a gentleman on CBS NFL’s weekend studio show. He then included a quote from a reader about the specific segment in which Giannotti and Recco were referred to as two clowns, then pondered whether or not they spoke with the same mannerisms in front of their families.

WFANs Boomer & Gio recently won the Spring Morning Book of Ratings with an 11.1 share and continues to simulcast on CBS Sports Network. The book expands beyond just sports radio stations, as it includes all New York radio stations and further highlights the appeal of the show. Nonetheless, Mushnick seems to be making a habit of harshly criticizing WFAN in his columns according to Toucher, and it’s something those in the industry recognize from afar.

He always complained about [Mike] Francesa, Touch said of Musnnick. He had this thing that Francesa supported the Nazis [and] all that crazy stuff [where] he was like, The audio doesn’t exist, but he really expanded on Israel or something.

Toucher went on to say that if Mushnick was going to host 20 hours of radio programming a week, he should probably prescribe it. Plus, he doesn’t think Mushnick can captivate an audience, likening it to when baseball luminary Bill James appears on different shows in midsummer.

This guy is just such an asshole; hes really a sting, Toucher said of Mushnick. I’ve been in markets where there are guys covering the radio; I don’t know anyone who hates it that much.
