A Portland man with a long history of volunteering for community organizations that cares for children is accused of sexually abusing a child over ten years ago, and police believe he may have be had other alleged victims.
Henry Stephen Steve Bauer, 58, was charged on May 27 with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse after a woman reported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office that Bauer assaulted her as a child . Detectives arrested Bauer at his home in southwest Portland on June 2.
Court documents allege Bauer abused a girl under the age of 14 in Washington County in 2009.
While investigating the abuse, detectives discovered that Bauer had been a regular volunteer with half a dozen organizations since 1970, most of which work with children. Investigators said they found allegations of misconduct by Bauers dating back to the 1970s.
In 1993, Bauer was removed from his post as Boy Scout leader over allegations he abused a young boy, detectives said.
Bauer also volunteered with Alpenrose Dairyville, Neah-Kah-Nie High School, Portland Revels, Rockaway Beach Police Department, and the Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts.
Anyone with information about Bauer is urged to call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 503-846-2700.
