The Council of Loyalist Communities (LCC) has called on Simon Coveney to step down as Irish Foreign Secretary after criticizing the British Minister for Brexit.
David Campbell, chairman of the LCC, accused Mr Coveney of a “delusional defense of NI protocol” with his comments relating to the remarks made by Lord Frost.
In an article for the Financial Times, Lord Frost accused the EU of “legal puritism”, which he said posed a risk to stability in Northern Ireland. He said the EU has been adamant in the dispute, which risks making the situation on the ground “totally unsustainable”.
“We are witnessing political turmoil, with the loss of Prime Minister Arlene Foster, the change in leadership of the UUP and street protests,” he wrote.
“And there are real impacts on lives and livelihoods. “
Mr Coveney slammed Lord Frost in a Twitter post, saying the Brexit minister continued to “hand over the blame for the difficulties” with the EU inflexibility protocol, but “it just isn’t the case”.
“Maros Sefcovic and the EU have constantly offered new solutions,” he wrote.
“Is it about media messages in the UK or is it really about solving problems together?” “
Urging Mr Coveney to step down, Mr Campbell said: “He says the EC (European Commission) has’ constantly come up with new solutions”.
“What are these new solutions? Can we see them please? And do they remedy the serious breaches of the Belfast Accord that the NI Protocol has caused? “
“The reality is that until Coveney and (Leo) Varadkar admit to distorting the agreement with the European Union and blatantly ignoring the views of many in Northern Ireland, the EU will continue to keep your head in the sand and jeopardize the peace process here. ”
He called on Mr Coveney to “apologize … and resign”.
