Eight men were arrested in an investigation into the racist online abuse of an anonymous Tottenham Hotspur player last month, London Metropolitan Police said on Friday.
Police say the investigation took place after a Spurs player was the target of “highly offensive and racist remarks” on Twitter following their 3-1 Premier League loss to Manchester United on April 11 .
Spurs condemned South Korean striker Son Heung-min’s “heinous” racial abuse on social media after the game.
Police said four other men were also questioned, all 12 of whom were “suspected of using words or behavior, or posting written materials with intent to stir up racial hatred” .
Spurs have said they welcome the measures taken by the police.
“There is no place for racism anywhere in our game and our society,” the club tweeted.
The abuse was initially detected through United’s online racist abuse reporting tool and then reported to Manchester Police, with Met Police investigating, the statement added.
