Creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK have brushed aside criticism of actor Samantha Akkineni’s painting with a brown face in the recently released second season of Amazon Prime Video’s The Family Man. They said every decision was made in the service of the character and that they were responsible filmmakers.
In an interview, the director duo said it wasn’t like they had an actor of a different race to play Raji, the Sri Lankan Tamil rebel who takes on Manoj Bajpayee’s Srikant Tiwari in season two.
Raj told Film Companion: “It all comes in the context of beauty, when you try to say that dark skin is not beautiful and light skin is beautiful… It’s not that context, number one. . There is no skin beauty context in all of this. We are all shades of brown. Now the idea is that if everyone is a shade of brown, it’s not about having a different race to play that (character). It’s not a race issue either. Those are the two contexts where you have to despise him, and that’s where the main problem is. And here we are. aware, it’s not like we’re irresponsible filmmakers to spread something like that. “
He added, “Here we are trying to get a good understanding of Raji’s character. We want her to say it, we want her to look at it, we want her to be that action girl who can hit the nail on the head; someone who can be physically fit and face a man who doubles her height. This is our main challenge. So if you look at what she is wearing … She is a soldier, she is a battered girl , there is no time to worry about taking care of yourself. If you ‘If you’re a soldier in the Himalayas your face is going to be red, that’s makeup.’
DK said, “In a way, that’s the character, isn’t she. And the character demanded that she be in good shape, because she’s a military man. And what did Samantha do to the role? She actually practiced. For three months she did training and got those biceps. She learned martial arts from the choreographer, and took classes, and that’s why the action is good. She learned this particular dialect of Tamil, which is not her usual Tamil. Now add to that the concept of hair, makeup and costume, this is the complete character that we present. Raji; she looks a certain way, she walks a certain way, and she’s a killing machine, and that’s it.
The second season of The Family Man explores Srikant’s inner conflict, as he balances his personal life with his wife and two children, with his professional life as a secret spy. During the season, he uncovers an assassination plot against the Indian Prime Minister, at the center of which is Raji.

In an Instagram post, Samantha said she took a “balanced, nuanced and sensitive” approach to playing Raji. “I was particularly attached to the fact that the portrayal of Rajis was balanced, nuanced and sensitive. I want the story of Rajis to be a stark and indispensable reminder for us, more than ever, to come together as humans for fight hatred, oppression and greed. If we don’t do this, countless more will be denied their identity, their freedom and their right to self-determination, “the actor wrote.
