England boss Gareth Southgate hit back at Roy Keane after his comments on Jordan Hendersons’ place in the England squad for Euro 2020.
Keane launched a scathing attack on the decision to call Henderson into the 26-man squad for this summer’s final, despite being out of action since February with a groin injury.
Keane said the Three Lions management were deluding themselves if they thought the Liverpool captain could have a positive impact on the pitch in the final.
“I was convinced Jordan was going to play the other day,” he told ITV ahead of the game. “I think it’s a huge distraction – he’s clearly not in good shape.
“I don’t think he should be involved. If he can’t start against Romania, he’s not in good shape.
“Physically and mentally this game will not be that difficult for him to manage, he is an experienced player.

“He hasn’t kicked a ball for three and a half months and he’s going to the European Championship? He can’t be right.”
The former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain added with disdain: “I’ve heard a lot of people say they want him everywhere. For what?
“Does he do card tricks?” Does he have a ditty? Does he take quizzes at night? What is he doing ?
“Liverpool won’t be happy either. Jordan sure doesn’t want to be around as a cheerleader, you want to play and he’s clearly far from it.”
During his post-game press conference at Riverside – after watching Henderson play 45 minutes – Southgate was asked about Keanes’ pre-game comments.
He said: Well, first of all I think we’re not distracted by anything. We know the situation Hendo is in, he had a very positive influence around the camp with the group.

It’s a step forward for him physically today which was important for him to be able to play a role in the tournament and we are realistic as to what that could be.
This is not a situation where his division of the group or his unrealistic what is possible.
We weren’t in good shape and if we can bring it to a good level that’s a bonus. We have 26 players, which was not the case before.
With penalties, we are very diligent in how we practice them. I didn’t expect what happened to happen and I wouldn’t expect it to happen again.

Southgate has also named Ben White to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in their latest 26-man squad.
The Liverpool defender was forced to retire with a thigh injury following the 1-0 win over Austria last week – the game in which White made his Three Lions debut as substitute.
Now, after an impressive 90 minutes against Romania in their second game on Sunday, the versatile Brighton defender has been selected for the final ahead of James Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard.
