ANN ARBOR, computer science professor at the University of Michigan, Walter Lasecki, announced that he would resign on August 30 after several allegations of sexual assault against him came to light.

Some of the allegations were exposed in a Michigan Daily investigation. UM’s student media interviewed four women who detailed Lasecki’s unwanted advances, including trial and error. Many of these cases have occurred at conferences and in the presence of others, according to the interviews.

All of the women were graduate students at the time, and only one was affiliated with UM. Choosing to remain anonymous, she said the misconduct took place on campus, off campus and at conferences.

However, emails obtained by the newspaper reveal that a total of 22 people underwent the same treatment from Lasecki.

Laseckis’ announcement awaiting resignation was sent by email to professors in the CSE department on Friday. Until August 30, Lasecki would be banned from any in-person interaction with students.

According to the Daily, two separate investigations conducted by the U-Ms Office of Institutional Equity and the Association for Computing Machinery came to very different conclusions.

The OIE investigation found that Lasecki did not violate the school’s sexual harassment policy and the four cases and did not sanction the teacher. In contrast, ACM concluded that Lasecki had violated its anti-harassment policy and banned him from participating in association events for at least five years.

An open letter from the CSE student body criticizes the department for adhering to OIE guidelines.

We consider it hypocritical to claim that the department places the safety and well-being of students first, when it does otherwise in the face of clear conflict, the letter reads. This lack of integrity cannot continue if the department genuinely cares about its students.

The letter has currently been signed by 191 students and community members, 77 of whom have chosen to remain anonymous.
