Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni appeared to accuse his Transport Minister Katumba Wamala of “making mistakes” which led to his recent assassination attempt.

Wamala barely survived his death last week when unknown motorcycle attackers sprayed his official car with bullets that would be 56 years old as he drove to a Kampala suburb.

The attackers killed his daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver Haruna Kayondo, but the minister, a senior retired army official, and his bodyguard survived.

“In the case of General Katumba, he also made some mistakes because apparently he was traveling without a following car. He traveled with an escort and a driver. I did not know. A four-star general should have a following car. But even then the bodyguard reacted and that’s how the killers got away. Two people died but he (guard) saved the general and himself, Museveni explained.

The president, who previously described the attackers as “pigs” and promised to hold them to account, also assured Ugandans the country was safe.

When something like this happens, it’s because the whole country was relaxed. We are now mobilized. The attackers made their terror by using our laxity. We are mobilized. When you provoke us and we wake up, we’ll catch you, he warned.

As of Monday, police had yet to arrest any suspects.
