GREENWICH – Repair work on a broken water line at Cos Cob was scheduled to extend until Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
According to the city, the 16-inch break in the main line occurred around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, causing the loss of water service to some customers in the area. Some fire hydrants in the region were also affected.
The break took place at the corner of Intrieri Lane. which is a private road, and Sachem Road, which is a public road, in the neighborhood near Cos Cob station.
Repairs were underway by Aquarion Water Co., and the city’s Department of Public Works is also on the scene.
Aquarion said the split affected approximately 20 customers on Indian Field Road, Intrieri Lane and Station Drive.
The estimated time to restore the service was between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, said Peter Fazekas, director of corporate communications for Aquarion.
The road remained passable during repairs, said Captain Mark Zuccerella of the Greenwich Police Department. Aquarion hired a GPD officer at his expense to direct traffic in the area, he said.
DPW communications specialist Renee Wallace said there had been no flooding following the hiatus, but workers will check for damage to roads in the area.
“According to one of our road inspectors, this is a major leak and could potentially be a major rupture,” Wallace said. “At the moment, the repair appears to take 24 hours.”
The water service was to be restored before that date.
The cause of the rupture has not been determined, but it may be linked to the hot weather, which caused an increase in demand for water as temperatures soared to around 90 degrees, Fazekas said.
“I am sure that the high water demands of yesterday contributed to the breakdown,” he said. “High water demands can cause a weak part of the main line to rupture. The water flows very quickly through the network.
In addition to customers who have lost service, Fazekas said there may be low water pressure on Overlook Drive, Spring Road, Cliff Road, West Brother Drive, Mallard Drive, Pintail Lane, Widgeon Way, Anderson Road , Orchard Drive, Wildwood Drive, Woodside Drive, Morningside Drive, Circle Drive, and Circle Drive Extension.
Aquarion said some customers may experience discolored water. Affected customers may want to use bottled water for drinking or cooking and delay washing clothes until the water runs clear, Aquarion said.
If the water is discolored, customers are advised to run the cold water faucet until the water appears clear before using it for drinking, cooking or washing.
State utility regulators are investigating a broken Aquarion water pipe in April and the resulting flood damage to a house, road and fire engine in central Greenwich.
