Plank supports the equity position
The council also voted unanimously to defer action on the creation of the post of director of student equity, which was part of the corrective action plan that the district submitted to the DPI.
Plank said the position would cost between $ 75,000 and $ 110,000 per year. This staff member would deal with a number of race relations issues, including family outreach, staff development, and student discipline.
Some school board members said they wanted to see a detailed job description before deciding if they wanted to go ahead with the job creation.
Wishau said he would oppose the move regardless of the job description because he wonders if it will improve student performance in reading, math and other basic areas. Again, Plank responded that student performance, in fact, would improve among students who have been isolated and who feel they don’t belong in school because of inequalities.
Other school districts are creating similar positions, Plank added. Burlington should do the same, he said, if it is to be seen as a leading school system in Wisconsin and if officials are to improve their service to underserved populations.
It represents being bold, being big, saying: We were going to do better, Plank said.
