Paulie Chinna is no longer Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA).
Prime Minister Caroline Cochrane announced the change of her cabinet in a press release Tuesday afternoon.
Chinna will retain her other positions, including minister responsible for the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation, and assume the portfolio of the Workers’ Compensation and Safety Commission. Shane Thompson will now be MACA’s minister and will retain his other portfolios including environment and natural resources, and land.
Chinna has been criticized by flood victims for a confused and slow response to the disaster in Fort Simpson and Tthek’hdl (Jean Marie River) First Nation.
“As a Cabinet, we have faced a number of challenges, including a pandemic and, more recently, flooding. Housing is our government’s top priority, and these changes will help support our efforts to improve the quality of housing in the Northwest Territories, ”Premier Caroline Cochrane said in a statement announcing the change.
The prime minister has not confirmed whether the move was specifically in response to flooding in the Dehcho.
Chinna held the MACA wallet before the COVID-19 pandemic, but was removed from it in April 2020. She took it over in July 2020.
Thompson is the Member of Parliament for the two affected communities and several flood victims have credited him for his efforts on the ground during the experiment.
