St. Petersburg Sunshine Skyway Bridge St. St. Petersburg Police Department
In a reversal of its overwhelmingly homophobic refusal to let the Jacksonvilles Acosta Bridge light up in Pride Lights, the Florida Department of Transportation now claims the 1,645-foot span can indeed be lit like a rainbow. .
That’s according to the office of Taryn Fenske, spokesperson for Governor Ron DeSantis, who told the Florida Times-Union that: “Ultimately, the lights will be back on tonight.
However, the status of the Tampa Bay area bridges allowed to be lit with rainbow lights for Pride Month is still uncertain. According to the Herald-Tribune, last week the department also rejected a request for Pride lighting on the Sarasotas John Ringling Causeway Bridge and rejected lighting plans for the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
U.S. Representative Charlie Crist, who is also running for governor and represents a city that hosts one of the nation’s biggest Pride events, sent a letter to DeSantis on Monday, asking that the Skyway Bridge be allowed to be lighted to colors of pride. , as in previous years.
Creative Loafing Tampa Bay has contacted the DeSantis office, FDOT, and the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority for further information and will update this post with any new information.
