After a strong performance throughout the race, Hamilton was promoted to second when his Red Bull title rival Max Verstappen crashed and caused a red flag.
But on restart, Hamilton “cut” the “magic brake” switch and pushed the brake bias forward, a mistake that ultimately ended the seven-time champion’s 54-point run streak.
Assessing what happened and Hamilton’s state of mind, Elliott said: “I know from talking to Lewis that Lewis somehow feels responsible for this.
But the reality is Lewis makes so few mistakes and that’s what really sets him apart from some of the other drivers.
“It’s our job to try and give him a car where it’s harder for him to make mistakes. We have to take our part, see how we can improve it and that’s something we will put in. room for the next race.
Mercedes still feels the pain
Immediately after the race, team principal Toto Wolff explained the “anger” and “pain” he felt after registering a first score of zero with both cars finishing since 2012.
That pain, Elliott revealed, is still felt by the team.
He added: “I think, as you might expect, we’re all feeling a little bit of pain this weekend and that’s okay and that’s something we won’t really get over until we get over it. not the chance to correct that, which will hopefully be the race in France.
“When you’re in sports you realize you have weekends like this and what’s really important is how we bounce back from it.
“How do we ease the pain of that, turn that into positive energy for learning, figure out how to extract all the learning we can from that, turn that into future performance and that’s what we’re really focusing on.
