MUMBAI: Mumbai received about 60 millimeters of rain in an hour on Wednesday, causing waterlogging in several places including Hindmata, the Milan metro and Sion. The flooding of the railroad tracks resulted in a brief suspension of commuter rail services.

The mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Kishori Pednekar, accused the railways of flooding the tracks and adjacent areas. Pednekar said the Central Railway did not cooperate with the BMC and therefore the BMC could not carry out clean-up work in the nullahs and adjacent areas that fall under the jurisdiction of the railways.

However, the Central Railway denied his claim. His spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said he had been in contact with BMC officials to provide the best possible services to passengers. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the BMC Disaster Management Room to take stock of the situation. BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal and Pednekar visited Hindmata.

Chahal said congestion had not been reported in most places due to the operation of pumping stations. “BMC is working on the war footing to remove excess rainwater,” he said.

“Although the floods disrupted traffic in some areas, in most areas there were no major disruptions. Local train services were suspended for a brief period, ”said Chahal.

Meanwhile, the BJP attacked the BMC because of the flooding. BJP chief Ashish Shelar said the first rain in Mumbai this season revealed BMC’s claim that 100% of nullahs had been cleaned up.

“The nullah cleans up the main scam where every year Rs 1,000 crore is wasted. The audit must be carried out. The Shiv Sena has led the BMC for 20 years. But Mumbai still suffers from a lack of basic infrastructure. Liability should be fixed, ”Shelar said.
