CHICAGO (WLS) – A Chicago city councilor accuses “gang culture” of killing a 14-year-old girl who was walking her dog Wednesday night in Back of the Yards.

“If we want our children to grow, live and flourish, we must end this craze for gang culture, period,” Alderman Raymond Lopez said Thursday.

A 14-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the head Wednesday night in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Police said the girl was approached by three people in the 1700 block of West 48th Street around 6 p.m. when one fired.

Surveillance video from a local convenience store shows the girl walking with her dog and boyfriend near 48th and South Wood.

“She came in and bought some crisps and soda, she had her dog here and her boyfriend was with her,” said Jamil Ayesh, a convenience store owner.

After she exits the store, the video shows three men walking down the street towards her. Police said the men asked the girl which gang she belonged to and said when the teenager told them she was not in a gang they shot her in the head and said. fled.

“She’s respectful. ‘Hi, how are you, everything,” Ayesh said. “She comes in with respect, comes out with respect.”

“This young woman and her boyfriend were just walking down the street, when three gang members approached them and confronted them, and it ended in a shootout,” Lopez said.

Lopez said he believed the group responsible was a known police group that he had been helping track for three years now.

Another surveillance camera recorded three people dressed in black approaching the intersection where the girl was shot.

And another video recording shows an SUV waiting for the men in black near an alleyway as they sprint towards the car, get in and drive away.

Neighbors said the 14-year-old and her boyfriend were not part of any gang. And witnesses said the girl often bought snacks at a nearby store, as she did before the shooting.

No one is in custody while detectives in the area investigate.

The 14-year-old joins a growing number of slaughtered children across town this year. According to data from the Chicago Police Department, 137 minors have been shot so far in 2021, up 20% from the same period in 2020. Of them, 21 have died.
