Avis Budget Group has agreed to pay $ 10.1 million to resolve allegations it violated the False Claims Act by fraudulently overcharging the U.S. government for rental services, the Department of Justice said. The government alleged that Avis Budget knowingly invoiced and received payment between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019 from the United States Department of Defense Travel Management Office for additional charges ineligible for the rental of cars, including collision insurance and personal injury. exemption insurance; additional liability cover and additional liability insurance; personal accident insurance; coverage of personal effects and protection of personal effects; and late fees. Additionally, some of the fees charged were already included in the rental rate, according to the DOJ. “The claims settled by this agreement are only allegations, and there has been no determination of liability,” the DOJ said in a statement posted on its website. Avis Budget did not immediately return a request for comment.
