Dentons and former business partner Jinshu John Zhang both allege malpractice in a dispute over Zhangs’ dismissal and a dispute over contingency fees.
The litigation, which arises from representing a client’s companies in China, includes allegations of counterfeiting and self-operation, report Law.com, Reuters and Law360.
Zhang filed a lawsuit last month in a California state court alleging Dentons ousted him for reporting the law firm forged a document in an attempt to transfer tens of millions of dollars from a Chinese customer, according to a court file.
Zhang says he demanded the dismissal of company CEO Michael McNamara, but the company fired Zhang instead, making fabricated or bogus arguments to justify the ouster.
Dentons said in a statement the infringement allegation was a total fabrication and told a different story in a notice referring the lawsuit to federal court in Los Angeles.
Dentons said he was entitled to collect attorney fees from the client in China after a multi-million dollar settlement of his case. But Zhang, who represented the client, demanded that Dentons guarantee him 85% of the emergency compensation, the notice of deletion said. Dentons refused.
Zhang toured Dentons to the client, with whom Zhang negotiated to have Zhang personally receive the lion’s share of the emergency allowance, according to Dentons’ notice of removal.
Zhang also began to secretly exfiltrate sensitive and confidential information from Dentons, including confidential customer information and sensitive personal information from outsiders.
When Dentons refused to allow Zhang to engage in improper personal dealings, Zhang responded with slanderous and false allegations against Dentons management.
Dentons fired Zhang on May 5 and sought arbitration for an alleged violation of the partnership agreement.
Zhang filed a complaint during arbitration. With Zhang’s clients gone, his reputation destroyed, his compensation wiped out, and his career in ruins, Zhang is now bringing this action against the defendants for statutory and common law wrongful dismissal, racial discrimination, international imposition of emotional distress and declaratory judgment. , to hold them responsible for their horrific and cruel misdeeds, he said in a legal file.
Dentons retorts in his deletion notice that Zhang’s claims are baseless, false and ultimately defamatory. His spokesperson told legal publications that Zhang’s claims “are as outrageous as they are false.
