Fernando Alonso believes he has performed better than critics have suggested since returning to Formula 1.

After two seasons of absence, Alonso returned to sport for 2021 with Alpine.

As a two-time world champion there was naturally a lot of excitement surrounding Alonso’s return, although the opening laps were a bit unspectacular with the Spaniard yet to finish a race ahead of his teammate. Esteban Ocon in which they both saw the checkered flag. .

Alonso however scored his best result since returning with P6 to Baku, and overall he thinks the idea that he has struggled on this return to Formula 1 so far is not fair. .

“I wasn’t too unhappy in some of the other races that the general opinion was really bad, I don’t think they were that bad,” he told Motorsport.com.

In Barcelona, of course, we were at one stop and we didn’t play there. But we were more or less at the same pace as Esteban [Ocon], in Monaco, and I think I finished two seconds behind him.

This thing was repeated every weekend, and the opinion was like I was having a lot of trouble, even comparing myself with other drivers who changed teams this year, like Daniel. [Ricciardo] or whatever.

But I didn’t think it was fair, because I think there is a very big difference in their struggles compared to what I had. I was not worried. I knew it was only a matter of time.

Alonso has previously admitted that Alpine was lacking in pace in Baku, although he went from P10 to P6 after the restart stopped with two laps to go.

However, at the same time, he feels that the Monaco and Baku city circuits have somewhat flattered the rivals of Alpine’s midfielder.

In Monaco and Baku we lost a bit [of performance], it was worse in Monaco while in Baku we were closer, but I think we have to come back to Barcelona and Portimao in good shape, ”he said.

“We have some hopes from France, that we can return to this kind of performance.

On city circuits, tire preparation helps our opponents to improve their performance in a way. They’re fighting for pole position now, but we don’t think that’s improving the car – it’s just the way they light up the tires for a street circuit.

But there are no more city circuits after that. Even Singapore is gone. So maybe we get back to more normal performance.
