If U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother has suffered in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria in 2017, then Puerto Rican politicians are to blame, not former President Trump.
This is the assessment of an aunt of the New York Democrat, who was interviewed in Puerto Rico by Britains Daily Mail.
Ocasio-Cortez made headlines earlier this month after posting photos of the Puerto Rican home of his 81-year-old grandmother, or “abuela,” Clotilde Rivera, and claiming the residence remained in poor condition, nearly four years after the hurricane, in part because “Trump blocked the $ relief for PR.”
But when a Daily Mail reporter visited Riveras’s home this week, a woman who claimed to be AOC’s aunt said the MP’s story was not accurate.
The aunt noted that the Category 5 hurricane caused extensive damage to the island, but insisted Trump was not to blame for residents struggling to get help.

“It’s a problem here in Puerto Rico with the administration and distribution of aid,” the aunt told the Daily Mail. “It’s not a problem with Washington. We got the help and it hasn’t reached the people.”

After Ocasio-Cortezs’ June 2 posts on Twitter, Tory commentator Matt Walsh hit back at the MP, saying it was “shameful that you live in luxury while still allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these sordid conditions “.
Walsh then raised more than $ 100,000 for Ocasio-Cortezs’ grandmother until the online campaign ended, but the MP’s family refused to accept the help.
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh raised money for U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother after the New York Democrat posted photos of squalid conditions inside the grandmother’s house in Puerto Rico.
In his June 2 Twitter feed, Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the Trump administration “has a major role” in preventing many Puerto Ricans from receiving hurricane relief funds. But she added that much of the problem was “systemic”, and also blamed “La Junta”, the islands’ tax control board, as well as local leaders.
The end result, she said, was “policies that evicted local families.”

Ocasio-Cortez then called for audits on how relief funds were being distributed and assured his Twitter followers that Rivera was “fine” despite what photos of his home seemed to suggest.
“She had a place to go and be taken care of,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote, then asked, “and the thousands who don’t?”
Hurricane Maria damaged 90% of Puerto Rico’s 1.3 million homes and killed nearly 3,000, the Daily Mail reported.
