Dear graduates, you will one day thank your critics | New

Osaka said in her statement that she was no longer going to submit to those who doubted her and therefore was not going to answer questions from reporters.

To this I can only offer one word of rebuttal: False.

I say wrong because, while it is certainly everyone to avoid criticism, I am pretty sure after living a number of years on this planet that it is a terrible idea.

In fact, it might be the surest possible way to ensure a life of mediocrity and underperformance, to settle for average when greatness could have been achieved.

I have heard more than once from high school students over the years about over-demanding teachers or coaches who criticize them for not delivering the results they want. And I always say the same thing: you will thank them one day.

In fact, as the 2021 class gears up to head into the big, wonderful world that awaits them, I would give them this one piece of advice: Always seek the criticism. Learn to accept it, learn to grow from it, and learn not to let it get you down. Let it make you work harder, be better, and go further.

And then, after all of that, just leave the skeptics in your dust.
