KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WATE) Just like many other canine moms, Susan Lopresto’s little Gerberian Shepsky, Cloe, is all for her.
The lady was selling these dogs and I fell in love with her through the photo, ”Lopresto said. “She’s my baby.”
Lopresto said Cloe was particularly interested in the Brood X Cicada this summer, saying she picked them up from trees and ate them.
They said it wasn’t dangerous for the dogs, that it wouldn’t hurt them, that even people would eat them, ”said Susan. “So I didn’t do anything about it, I just let her do it.
Susan said it was a few days later that she could tell something was wrong with Cloe.
FDA: Do not eat cicadas if you are allergic to this food
Vomiting, diarrhea, she just lay down, but not at all herself, ”Lopresto said of her dog’s symptoms. “I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t want to drink.
Susan took her to several doctors, including the Knoxville Emergency Pet Clinic and their regular vet at the Seymour Vet Clinic. In total, she spent about $ 1,000 on medical treatment. This includes payment for visits, special food, medication, and other over-the-counter medical supplies.
I’m not an entomologist by any means, so I don’t know the ins and outs of insect studies or anything like that, ”vet Tatum Marquis said. “Although they have a hard exoskeleton, which can cause some irritation when digested.
Marquis isn’t the vet who treated Cloe, but she says the staff at the Seymour Vet Clinic see a handful of patients each week, bringing in their pets with the same issues as Cloe and citing cicadas as the main culprits.
It is quite possible that these little insects cause gastrointestinal upset in general and cause inflammation of the intestines and small intestine, ”said Marquis. “It can lead to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.
Marquis went on to say that to his knowledge, cicadas will not kill pets and do not carry anything that can be fatal. She warns, however, that if any of these symptoms are left untreated, such as dehydration, it can be fatal.

She also said all dogs will react differently when it comes to eating something unusual.
One dog can act very differently from another, which means that a cicada can do nothing and a cicada can make them pretty sick from the irritation, ”she said. “It depends on the individual.
Marquis encouraged people to be their pets’ number one health advocate.
As for Susan, she said it wasn’t even about the money she had to spend to make her Cloe feel better. She just wants other pet owners to be in the know and on the prowl while the cicadas are still around.
I just wish they had informed people in advance to watch their dogs.
