Prime Minister’s negligence and lax borders to blame for delay in lifting lockdown

Boris Johnson’s negligence and incompetence and the country’s lax border measures have led to the need to delay the lifting of coronavirus restrictions in England, according to the shadow Home Secretary.

ick Thomas-Symonds will nickname the Delta variant of the coronavirus the Johnson variant in a speech Tuesday on UK Covid border policy.

He will argue that the Prime Minister’s refusal to make tough decisions has left Britain facing more weeks of restrictions.

In the speech, Mr Thomas-Symonds will point out that Britain’s status as an island nation means that, like New Zealand and Australia, our border protections should have been one of our natural strengths while throughout this pandemic.

People across the country have every right to be angry at being so badly left behind Nick Thomas-Symonds

He will cite figures showing that 20,000 passengers who could have been infected with the Delta variant arrived from India between April 2 and April 23.

Labor will force another vote in the House of Commons on the issue, and as part of the vote the party is calling for the removal of the Orange Travel List.

Commenting on Mr Johnson’s announcement on Monday night, Mr Thomas-Symonds is expected to say: The delay is happening because a new variant first identified overseas has been allowed to settle in this country.

There is one reason and only one reason why this has happened: the lax border measures of the Conservative ministers.

They enabled the Delta variant, first identified in India, to gain a foothold here.

Let’s call it that. Let’s put the blame where it should be.

In this country, it is the Johnson variant.

The Prime Minister’s negligence and incompetence, his unwillingness to make difficult decisions have left Britain facing weeks of more restrictions and even more uncertainty.

Pakistan and Bangladesh were added on April 9. Yet the Prime Minister waited 14 days to add India. These 14 days have resulted in delays in our freedoms, untold damage to our economy and risks for thousands of jobs.Nick Thomas-Symonds

It’s a crystal-clear metaphor for the way Boris Johnson and his government work: They spend so much time laying down and posing to be tough at the borders, but when it comes to protecting our country and the variants, they have failed.

People across the country have every right to be angry that they have been so badly left behind.

We are an island country. Like New Zealand and Australia, our border protections should have been one of our natural strengths throughout this pandemic.

Instead, this has been one of our biggest weaknesses.

Regarding when to put India on the red list, he should say: Pakistan and Bangladesh were added on April 9.

Yet the Prime Minister waited 14 days to add India.

These 14 days have caused delays in our freedoms, untold damage to our economy and risks for thousands of jobs.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority suggest that at least 20,000 passengers who could have been infected with the Delta variant arrived from India between April 2 and April 23, which is a staggering number.

It was incredibly reckless that Boris Johnson placed his photo taken with Prime Minister Modi on his priority list before protecting the British people.

No one blames people who traveled when they were authorized to do so; the blame lies with the Prime Minister for his unjustifiable delay.

It was a fortnight of failure and we are all suffering the consequences.
