Lots of criticism to be made as Clippers blow Jazz in Game 4

Los Angeles Three thoughts on the Utah Jazzs 118-104 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers from Salt Lake Tribune Jazz defeated writer Andy Larsen.

1. A quick list of everyone I’m disappointed

Listen: I understand that the Jazz came back in this game, to improve a little the Jazzs 29 point deficit they had at the start of the game. But when you get to that big deficit, you’ve almost certainly lost. It was an unacceptable way to play a critical playoff game.

So I think it’s fair to read the riot act to everyone.

Bojan Bogdanovic, you are the Jazzs’ second best offensive player with Mike Conley absent. This means that when the other team sends two or three guys to Donovan Mitchell, you have to have more influence in the proceedings. It’s your turn.

In particular, you need to grab the ball and make quick, decisive and aggressive decisions: either force a switch you want or attack with the space you have, especially if Mitchell passes it to you. Usually, if you’re open, you should just shoot it. The game calls for a secondary creator, but you’ve been too passive to breach Mitchell’s side.

Jordan Clarkson, you are also a very talented attacking player. But you’re a lot more efficient when you take good shots, and when you take bad ones and drive through traffic without an escape plan, you absolutely kill your team.

It’s far too early in the shot clock to take the worst shot in basketball.

Jordan, you are defended by Kawhi Leonard. It’s the end of the quarter and you want to use as much of the clock as possible. Now is definitely not the right time to drive around and shoot a float that doesn’t stand a chance.

It’s about not valuing possessions at a knockout level and killing the Jazz.

Derrick Favors, you can’t be that passive defensively. Right now, the Clippers are licking their chops when they see you on the floor, knowing they’ll have easy baskets around the edge.

I loved you helping out on Kawhi Leonard’s dunk, a lot of defenders would have made a business decision there. It wasn’t your fault. But on other pieces, if you can get your job done early on, you’ll have a much better chance of making an impact, especially considering how athleticism seems to have declined again.

Rudy Gobert, the Clippers play Marcus Morris Sr. in the middle. In these situations, you have to be absolutely dominant on the glass. You can’t let the Clippers guys get inside and push you under the hoop on the glass you need to fight!

Give balls to your teammates, stay connected to the game and fight until the end of possessions.

Joe Ingles, I need you to be more focused and engaged on the pitch. You have achieved a team record of +4! But given your shooting and playing ability, you need to be more involved.

Here you were guarded by Marcus Morris. Instead of attacking, you looked left at Clarkson guarded by Beverley, then kicked Bogdanovic, guarded by Leonard. Joe, the answer in this situation is that it’s time for you to step back three or drive with your left hand.

Donovan Mitchell, you have been absolutely brilliant offensively individually. Creepy. But yes, even you are going to get reviews here.

You’ve been propelled into the role of leader without Mike Conley. But now the next big step has to be to find ways to let your teammates eat too. The team can’t have that many possessions of you dribbling the ball. When the defense crumbles on you, you need to be able to trust your teammates, even if they haven’t been very helpful, it will allow them to gain pace and confidence.

Clarksons open for the first part of that possession, then ONeale has to take the wrong shot at the end of it by swinging it towards the open Bogdanovic because it’s the end of the shot clock. Faster actions, more passes.

Bogdanovic is open here, and Gobert also has a lag against Patrick Beverley.

Ultimately, Jazz will need other players than you to be successful. Help them succeed.

Georges Niang, I understand that this series of filming has been tough for you. I understand that the shot will be top to bottom, and at any time you can start contributing via the 3 point shot.

But in every other aspect of your game, you can’t show off your shooting struggles. You have to be a little bit focused on the defense, it’s incredibly stupid defense.

Royce ONeale, you take responsibility for the best offensive player on the team. You are a tone giver. If you’re engaged, if you can keep the opposition in front, the team can stay alive defensively. While they can just come after you, Gobert can’t cover up every mistake.

So, damn it, man, that won’t do. I can’t let PG ol love you that.

It’s not brain surgery, but look to be successful in this series, Jazz has to play better. Individual players lose focus, make bad choices, and don’t perform as they should. For some players, only small adjustments are necessary. For others, this is the real gut check time.

2. Coach rotation adjustments required

Quin Snyder, I understand that to some extent consistency in approach has been a cause of success in the organization. For almost all of this season, you’ve used the same spin, with great results: a No.1 seed. Playing Gobert at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth, in particular, has been incredibly useful in the regular season.

It’s time to make some changes.

Gobert finally stifled the Clippers’ attack at the start of the second half. For the most part, behind his game, your team had reduced the lead from 29 to 14. So at 6:34 in the third quarter, maybe now is not the time to sit Gobert down and play instead. favors no matter what you all have done. season.

Yes, I understand that Gobert committed 3 faults. But due to this nasty problem, he only played 13 minutes in the first half. But without Gobert in the match, the team had no ability to defend themselves. Did extending her time definitely work? No. But would that have given the team a better chance to stay close? Yes.

The most Gobert has played in the playoffs is 36:04. It’s not enough. The difference on the pitch between Gobert’s 40 minutes and Gobert’s 32 minutes while playing tonight is huge. Play your best players.

I also think it’s time to do what it takes to cut Niang and Clarkson’s minutes, which means playing more Ingles, and maybe even someone like Ersan Ilyasova. Look, I’m not saying Ilyasova would bring a ton, but he could make the Clippers stop just a second before attacking; at the moment, what they are doing in Niang is ruthless. (No player in these playoffs has lost more money in free agency than Niang.)

Mike Conley, of course, would make everything much more beautiful. And heck, by any reasonable standard, you outdo in this series: 2-2 without Conley and with the Clippers shooting like this is probably a result jazz fans would have taken before the series started. But the tide has turned to LA, and a coaching adjustment is needed to bring them back to Jazz.

3. The state of the list

Dennis Lindsey, you needed to create a list with more flexibility. Look at the Clippers: they have different types of players for different situations. Need a game player? Play Rajon Rondo. Need a defensive ball pressure guy? Play as Patrick Beverley. Need to shoot? Play as Luke Kennard.

Your list is lacking in good options for Snyder to use. You have no point guard options behind Mike Conley other than Trent Forrest, a two way point guard is exactly what this Jazz roster needs right now as they struggle to run a hint on an offense when things are getting complicated. Playmakers are useful for this, but the Jazz don’t have one at the moment.

It would also be nice if you could play switchable basketball, just a little ball to give the Clippers another look. But who would play the five in such a situation? Ersan Ilyasova, I guess? It’s a reach to play him playoff minutes while he was out of the NBA for most of the season.

Instead, you used a first-round pick on Udoka Azubuike and your trade deadline acquisition was Matt Thomas in a season where you said your goal was to win the championship. None of those players filled any holes on the roster, instead, tripling only on facets of the game your team already excelled at. Phoenix, meanwhile, showed off how to use the end of the roster on potentially playable players, guys like Cam Payne and ETwaun Moore and Torrey Craig.

Conley’s return would also help you look good.

Ultimately, we’ve had holes in that Jazz playoff list since losing to the Nuggets last season, no depth on guard, poor perimeter defense and a lack of defensive versatility at forward and center points. The Jazz just might get through this series, and it would always be nice to have those options for later in the playoffs.

You did a lot of good, but the end of this list is a mess, and it hurts now.

Note that all of these reviews don’t mean that I don’t think these people are good at their jobs. The players are very good in all reasonable respects. Quin Snyder is a Top 5 coach in my opinion, and Dennis Lindsey a Top 10 GM. And yet it’s a competitive company, where the top 5 or 10 isn’t good enough, only one team comes home happy. When the team is playing badly, the criticism is fair. The team played badly.

The Clippers exposed some of the Jazz’s weaknesses in Game 4 and will need to improve from the top to the bottom to bounce back in this series. They certainly can, but we will have to change our approach.
