Fashion giant Zara has come under fire after Vanessa Perilman, head of the women’s department, attacked Palestinian model Qaher Harhash on Instagram. Caught in the act of anti-Palestinian rhetoric, Vanessa reportedly sent controversial messages to Qaher in response to the pro-Palestinian messages from the model from occupied East Jerusalem.
Qaher then shared screenshots of their conversation on Instagram where Vanessa not only blamed terrorism in Gaza on Palestinian victims, but also attacked the model’s Muslim faith. His message read: Maybe if your people were educated, they wouldn’t blow up the hospitals and schools that Israel helped pay for in Gaza.
She added, I think it’s funny that you are a role model because in reality it is against what the Muslim faith believes in and if you were to come out of the closet in any Muslim country you would be stoned to death.
Passionate about these hateful posts, social media users began using hashtags like #BoycottZara and #ZaraMustApologise to condemn fast fashion brands’ complicity with the racist and Islamophobic comments of the designer and quite quickly, screenshots of the conversation was exposed on Twitter. As one user wrote, Dear @Zara, Your chief designers’ anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic tirade is pure racism. How will you react, especially since billions of Muslims shop in your stores around the world? (sic), another claimed, just in case someone missed Zaras’ design manager or whatever she said. It’s MUCH WORSE that the part going around that the fashion industry at all levels has to take a close look at the xenophobic racist beliefs that are so apparent (sic) and yet another conem, Wow @ZARA .. maybe follow the reality more closely. You support the settlers shouting Death to the Arabs and bombing the Palestinians in Gaza. You continue to lend your name to the Israeli persecution. Be more than a brand. Have the courage to help people live and live freely (sic).

Vanessa Perliman, chief designer at Zara DMd, a young Palestinian model, this racist scumbag and when called out, issued a lukewarm apology before removing all of her social media. I emailed Zara demanding disciplinary action and that was their dismal response. pic.twitter.com/eCJ6FUei2u

@ZARA, if you care about your Muslim consumers you would be disciplining Miss Perliman for her blatant Islamophobia. Otherwise, we’ll boycott your clothing store until you punish her for her disgusting comments about Muslims. https://t.co/JFvAdDmvVW

Fearful of losing her job amid the widespread backlash, Vanessa apologized to Qaher before deleting her Instagram account and other social media pages. The model later revealed that the Spanish retail brand asked him to publicly share Vanessas’ apology, but he declined, saying: If Zara wants to make a statement with me, they must also tackle Islamophobia. When some fashion designers said anti-Semitic things, they were fired. He added: So far, Vanessa Perilman has not been fired.
