Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer has been criticized for using an inappropriate term to describe mentally disabled children.
He apparently used the “r-word” to describe his own experiences of community rejection of housing initiatives intended to serve vulnerable populations.
Schumer’s office released the following statement to News10NBC after requesting comment on it:
For decades, Senator Schumer has been a strong advocate for sound policy and comprehensive funding of services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He used an inappropriate and outdated word in his description of an effort he supported and which was led by the AHRC to build a group home in his Brooklyn neighborhood decades ago to provide housing and services for children with intellectual disabilities. He is sincerely sorry for his use of outdated and offensive language.
