Tyler Glasnow attributes injury to MLB ban on sticky substances

Tyler Glasnow is the best pitcher for the Rays, the team with the best record in Major League Baseball. The 27-year-old right-hander was continuing his dominant start to the season Monday night against the White Sox when he was pulled out of the game after just four innings and 53 shots.

On Tuesday, Glasnow was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and flexor tendon strain. Glasnow will be recovering from the injury in an attempt to avoid Tommy John surgery, but seeing a potential Cy Young candidate fall on the defending AL champions is a huge disappointment.

Glasnow shared some thoughts on how he might have hurt himself with intercourse on Tuesday. Specifically, he accuses the new MLB edict of starting to ban pitchers from using sticky stuff to grab or give balls extra spin. Glasnows’ injury was announced the same day MLB sent a note to teams saying it was starting to enforce existing rules later this month.

Glasnow just launched a very honest rant:

“I just threw 80 innings of something and you just told me I can’t use anything. I have to change everything.

I really 100% believe that is why I got injured. I am frustrated that the MLB does not understand. You can’t just tell us not to use anything. It’s crazy.”

Tyler Glasnow has just taken on the midseason crackdown. He stopped using sunscreen a few times ago and subsequently felt unwell due to difficulty with adhesion. Same last night. He says this has contributed to his current injury. He hopes to be back at the end of the season.

Glasnow: Sunscreen and rosin are apparently the same as Spider Tack. Alright, I guess I’ll adapt and learn. And the only thing I’ve learned is that it hurts to throw a ball in the middle of the season, to have something not to have something.

Glasnow said he stopped using sunscreen to grab balls a few early days ago and started to experience pain in his elbow. It seems his biggest problem with MLB is that he enforces these rules mid-season instead of letting pitchers know about new points of interest during a full offseason.

The Rays are 43-24 at the time of Glasnows’ injury. The pitcher is 5-2 this season with a 2.66 ERA and a WHIP of 0.93. He averages 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings compared to 2.8 walks per nine.

Glasnow made another solid start against Chicago on Monday before experiencing some elbow pain:

Will more pitchers be injured without the aid of grip improvements when they change their routine mid-season? Losing one of AL Cy Young’s favorites to the league’s top team is troubling enough.
