LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Organizers say they want LA City Councilor Mike Bonin to step down in part because of his response to the homeless crisis in Venice, which is part of the 11th District that ‘it represents.

Bonin being served with the notice of intent to recall was the first step towards a possible special election to remove him from office amid growing frustration and anger over the homelessness crisis.

Critics say the city councilman’s handling of the crisis in his western district is just one of many concerns, including failure to keep election promises.

“I would say roaming is one of them,” said the organizer of the XX callback. “Every thing he can do wrong, he has done it wrong, I feel like.”

Bonin said the recall effort is part of an attack on progressive politicians in the community.

He issued a statement, saying in part:

“This is an extravagant waste of taxpayer dollars and a barely disguised attempt to derail my efforts to bring real solutions to our homelessness crisis… I will not be deterred in my efforts. to solve our most difficult problems and I will continue to push for the big, incremental change that LA needs and deserves.

If the documents from the organizers of the recall pass through the city, it would probably give them 120 days from July to collect 27,000 signatures.

The vote for it would come about a month before Bonin’s election, who is running for his third term.

A $ 5 million proposal presented by Bonin to tackle homelessness was withdrawn from the committee on Thursday and will go to the finance committee on Monday, where it is expected to pass.

Bonin is one of many targeted for dismissal, as LA city council member Nithya Raman is also the subject of a recall effort.
