(The Center Square) A small majority of Americans blame Democrats for rising inflation, according to a recent poll, as both parties fight to position themselves in the battle for economic messages ahead of the next election.

The Trafalgar Group and the States Convention for Action released the poll on Tuesday, which found 39% of Americans blame President Biden for rising inflation and 14.4% blame the current US-led Congress. democrats.

Although President Donald Trump has been out of power for a few months, only 17.7% of voters say he is to blame. A smaller percentage credit the previous Congress and 17.9% don’t know who to blame.

The poll came out the same day that new data from Bureau of Labor statistics showed the price of capital goods had risen, a key indicator of inflation. According to the BLS, capital goods rose 6.6% for the 12 months ending in May, the largest increase since 12-month data was first calculated in November 2010.

It comes just days after the BLS reported a significant increase in consumer prices, another marker of inflation.

Over the past 12 months, the All-items index increased 5.0% before seasonal adjustment; this is the largest 12-month increase since a 5.4% increase for the period ending August 2008, BLS said earlier this month. The All Articles Index increased 5.0 percent for the 12 months ending in May; it has been trending upward every month since January, when the 12-month change was 1.4%. The index for all items minus food and energy increased 3.8 percent over the past 12 months, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending June 1992. The index for l Energy has increased 28.5 percent in the past 12 months, and the food index has increased 2.2 percent.

The employment figures were also disappointing. In May, the federal government announced that the economy had created just over a quarter of expected new jobs, well below expectations. This month, the economy did better but still fell short of expectations.

Biden remained positive about the economy, but Republicans were quick to point out these poor economic indicators in campaign messages and fundraising. The latest figures suggest it might work to their advantage.

Today you pay more for a cup of coffee, your morning breakfast, refueling at the pump, said Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. Inflation is a tax on all Americans and it is directly caused by the disastrous policies of President Bidens.

The economic message paid off in raising funds for the party. The Republican National Congressional Committee touted its third consecutive month of record fundraising. The group finished last month with $ 42.1 million in cash on hand, double what they had at the same time in the last cycle.

Americans are ready to do whatever is necessary to stop the socialist agenda of Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats, said NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer. Mays’ record fundraising figures are just the latest indication that House Republicans are poised to reclaim a majority.
