Poland’s senior politicians and officials were the subject of a large-scale cyberattack which the country said originated from Russia.
Top Polish officials, ministers and MPs from various political parties have been cyberattacked, said Jarosaw Kaczyski, Poland’s most powerful politician and chairman of the National Security Affairs Committee and defense, in a press release.
An investigation by Polish and Allied security services revealed that the cyberattack was carried out from within the territory of the Russian Federation. Its scale and scope are great, Kaczyski said.
According to an EU diplomat familiar with the incident, the operational and technical analysis carried out by Poland’s national cybersecurity incident response teams confirmed that the infrastructure and modus operandi used in cyber attacks was the same as those used by entities sponsored by Russia.
More than 30 parliamentarians, government officials and some journalists were affected, added the diplomat. The attacks began in September 2020.
Poland today called on EU countries in the EU Council to hold a ministerial debate on how to respond to the attacks, the diplomat said, adding that the issue will be discussed by foreign ministers on Monday. .
Poland handed over to EU member states, the European Commission and the Council a document on details of cyberattacks carried out in recent days on Friday, the diplomat added.
Cyber security services are briefing politicians and officials who have been affected by the attack, according to Kaczyski’s statement.
