Restaurant owners must hire staff to stay open

As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, some restaurant owners say they could close if they can’t hire enough staff.

FERNDALE, Michigan – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that all restrictions related to COVID-19 will be lifted on June 22, and small business owners say it is difficult to open because they cannot find the necessary staff .

“It’s very difficult to open 100%, 50% or 60% if you can’t find the worker. I need bartenders, I need waiters, I need cooks, ”said Gorge Gize, owner of Assaggi Bistro in Ferndale.

Gize says he thinks unemployment benefits are the reason he can’t find people to work.

“How can we operate when the government, the federal government or the local government buy the money from the unemployed,” says Gize.

Union Joints co-owner Curt Catallo says Gize isn’t the only owner struggling to find staff.

“We know we have to fit 400 more people into our group until we can be at 100% of our capacity, and that’s a huge task,” Catallo said.

These business owners say not only that it is difficult to find staff, but that those who are willing to work demand higher wages.

Gize says he can only open four days a week instead of six without a full staff.
