SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin (WFRV) A respected art museum in Northeast Wisconsin is in the news this week.
What opens on Saturday, June 26 is an offshoot of the illustrious John Michael Kohler Arts Center in downtown Sheboygan.
Called Art Preserve, the $ 40 million three-storey facility will exhibit and house more Kohler Arts Centers acquisitions.
If you’re scratching your head when it comes to exhibiting art in your home, imagine what Laura Bickford faces every day.
She is a curator at Art Preserve, and she has 25,000 objects to work with.
Its workspace is 56,000 square feet compared to 1,600 square feet for a typical home.
What is on display is of a great variety.
Artists can come from anywhere on the globe.
Some exhibition areas are devoted to the work of a person.
Other areas are of a specific type of art produced by a single creator.
And then there are exhibitions of unique works by individual artists.
The philosophy of the facility is basically anything goes.
This means that whether you are a self-taught artist, a skilled artist, or even not an artist, something imaginative that you create might strike the imagination of the center.
The place has a knack for surprising, space after space after space.
The quaint manners of the Kohler Arts Centers have garnered widespread attention, and now the center is truly spreading its wings.

The art reserve is located at 3636 Lower Falls Road, on the west side of Sheboygans. The project is in harmony with the natural setting on 36 acres.
It’s not really a standard museum, Laura Bickford said on a recent media tour. It really is a laboratory.
She shuns labels. Contemporary is the closest she is comfortable with.
The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, located three miles east of the art reserve, has attracted attention with its collection which includes full and partial environments of over 30 vernacular, self-taught and academic artists.
One of the memorable residences, known as Strass Cowboy for its garish and sparkling look, is moved and recreated in the art reserve. It might as well be called Curators Headache 101 for all the minutiae and details required in the move.
Something new and / or exotic can be found around every corner in the art reserve.
The displays will change, sometimes to rest works on paper or on fabric. The art reserve is also a storage facility.
Some living artists have been commissioned to create works on site to add to their collection of works.
Visitors will notice that one of the talked about features of the Kohler Arts Center is performed in the art restroom at the art store. The installations include floral, patterned and fantasy images.
Some people acquire an item as a topic of conversation. The center and the reserve are full of conversation topics to see and discuss.
