Phil Foden told Gareth Southgate’s critics they had no idea as he hailed the England manager as a great coach.
Southgates’ selection and tactics have come under scrutiny in Euro 2020’s opening two games, especially following Friday’s disappointing draw at home against Scotland.
The Three Lions have been timid, registering just three efforts on target in their two games, including the winner of Raheem Sterlings against Croatia.
Despite the disappointing start to the final leading to criticism from Southgate, Foden has no time for those questioning the England boss.
He’s a great coach who works with him every day to see what he looks like, the Manchester City winger told talkSPORT.
He always has the back of the players and I think his tactics are great so all these negative people don’t know what they’re talking about because Gareth is a great coach.
I believe in my teammates. I see us in training every day and how creative players create opportunities.
I just feel like it’s going to happen in the next game and we’re going to create more of it, so I don’t see it as a concern at all.
Foden has enjoyed a strong campaign at City, scoring 16 goals and winning the Premier League and the Carabao Cup, while also being named Young Player of the Season.
He has so far been unable to wear that form in Euros, but has dismissed claims he would struggle to adjust between club and country tactics.
We don’t play in a very different way, it’s a similar lineup so I think I’m fine, he said.
Obviously I can still do better but I think I can just play for England like I play for my club, so why not?
I just want to try to be the best version of myself. Try to bring my club form to the national team, I’m always looking to improve my game for England and hope in the next game I can show what I can do.
Foden grabbed attention ahead of the tournament when he arrived at St Georges Park with a new look, having dyed his hair blonde.
He has since completed his new color and revealed he has the rest of the England squad for a similar style if they go all the way this summer.
Do you know what, I told the team if we win they have to have the same hairstyle as me and they all agreed, he added.
Hope if we win it you will see everyone with the same hairstyle, I think Romania did it so everyone got the same hairstyle which would be funny.
