Gasly defends ‘hard race’ after Norris criticism

At Sunday’s French Grand Prix, Norris called Gasly an idiot on team McLaren radio after the Frenchman forcibly passed him and then slipped himself.

It was a tough race, but I really liked it, ”Gasly commented when asked about the Norris incident by Motorsport.com.

So I tried to keep it clean. It’s really a difficult turn, very long, you are at the limit of grip.

You also have a tailwind so it’s hard to keep the car on track. I haven’t seen the images, I will look to see if it was too much or not.

I slipped on the sidewalk on the way out. I think I’m a fair enough runner, and on the next lap I think we had a fight again. This is the race.

Gasly ultimately lost to Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, but he continued his streak of strengths in 2021 with a seventh place finish.

I have to let the emotions calm down a bit, because it was an intense race with a lot of things going on, he explained.

But you know, P7, we are the fourth best car in the end, behind the two McLarens, the two Mercedes and the two Red Bulls. So I think we can only be happy about it.

Obviously there are a few more things that I think maybe could be done slightly differently, like around the pit stop we left Charles [Leclerc] and [Daniel] Ricciardo undermined us, and it cost us the track position.

“I had to fight right out of the box and damaged the tires quite early in the stint.

So there are a few more points to review, but overall P7, fourth car, can’t be complained about. Lots of good battles so I think it was a solid race.

Gasly said he couldn’t understand why Ferrari had performed so poorly in the race, with Leclerc ultimately dropping to a modest 16th place.

I was really surprised, crazy, I don’t really know what happened with Charles. But it certainly damaged the tire a lot, ”he said.

The point is, the degradation was so high. We didn’t really push, even at the start. Some laps it was strong, others you could tell I had a big grain, so it was quite difficult in terms of tire management.

Gasly admitted he had some handling difficulties as well: I had no stability, I had no spin in the middle of the turn, my traction was crap.

It was very difficult, I think, for everyone probably, just completely different from Friday. Completely different from Saturday. And there is not much you can do.

I tried to do my best with the limitation I had, but I have to say it was very, very difficult.
