Parents of children studying at a private school in the city submitted a petition to the district administration alleging that the school was forcing them to pay 100% of the fees during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was contrary to the Madras High Court order which directed schools to charge only 75% of fees.
In a petition presented to the Collectorate here on Monday, parents said the court asked schools for the 2020-21 school year to collect only 75% of the fee and only run online classes. We have paid 50% of the total fee and are ready to pay the balance 25%. But the school charges 100% of the fee, the petition says, and adds that the school has also increased the fee by 15%. They alleged that the school withheld the results of final exams from students who did not pay full fees. A complaint was filed with the director of education and the school initially accepted the CEO’s order. But later the school demanded 100% of the fee and failed to promote the students to the next class.
Their petition added that online courses for 2021-2022 had started and only students who had paid the full fees for the last academic year received the link for the courses. Our livelihoods have been affected due to the pandemic and we are unable to afford the costs, according to the petition.
