West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took the Supreme Court to the Supreme Court on Monday, claiming that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made false claims about his presence in protest outside the CBI office in Kolkata after the arrest of two Trinamool congressional ministers and a prominent MP on May 17 in connection with the Narada 2016 affair.
In a petition filed by lawyer Astha Sharma, the CM said: There is no evidence that the petitioner holds a dharna or gherao or a seat outside the CBI office and therefore constitutes false allegations. ..
The case was scheduled for hearing at 10:30 am.
The CM challenged the Calcutta High Court’s refusal to file affidavits by it and state justice minister Moloy Ghatak on their role on the day of the arrest of four Trinamool congressional leaders on May 17 by the CBI in connection with the Narada duct tape case.
A bench of Judges Hemant Gupta and Aniruddha Bose will hear separate appeals filed by Chief Minister Ghatak and the West Bengal government on Tuesday.
Earlier, the highest court said it would hear the appeal filed by Ghatak on June 22.
The highest court on June 18 had asked the high court to hear the case a day after the supreme court considered appeals from the state government and Ghatak against the order.
On June 9, a bench of five Calcutta High Court judges hearing the CBI’s request for the transfer of the Narada duct tape case from the CBI Special Court to the High Court said it would later rule on reviewing the affidavits of Banerjee and Ghatak on their respective roles on the day of the arrest of four leaders in connection with the case.
Senior attorneys Rakesh Dwivedi and Vikas Singh, appearing for Ghatak and the state government, had said there was a need to record the affidavits in the High Court as they deal with the roles of those involved on May 17.
