MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) – The Wisconsin seniors openly criticized coach Greg Gard during a season-end team meeting that was secretly taped and later sent to a newspaper.
The Wisconsin State Journal said it received a 37-minute audio file of a Feb. 19 team meeting this week that included seven senior players, Gard and three assistant coaches. The newspaper said it received the recording from an anonymous email account and only included part of the actual meeting.
During the meeting, forward Nate Reuvers told Gard that “we don’t have a relationship” and that “I personally don’t think or feel you care about our future aspirations. “. Guard Walt McGrory tells Gard, “I don’t know if I’ll talk to you again someday after this.”

“He was sitting there listening and there wasn’t a single dry eye in the whole room at the end of it all,” an unidentified player later told the State Journal. “The most important thing he did at the end was apologize again and he was in tears and he said, ‘It’s not your fault, it’s my fault . ‘”
Gard told the State Journal “It’s so disturbing that someone takes a private family reunion and goes public.” Wisconsin officials did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Tuesday.

Wisconsin went 18-13 and lost to eventual National Champion Baylor in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. The Badgers opened the season seventh after winning a share of the Big Ten regular season title in 2019-20.
Le Gard holds a 119-70 record with four places in the NCAA tournament in six seasons. The Badgers would also have won an NCAA offer in 2020 if the pandemic had not interrupted the season.
Although the NCAA has given seniors the opportunity to return for one more year of eligibility due to the pandemic, Brad Davison is the only one of seven 2020-21 Wisconsin seniors planning to play for the Badgers next season.
