ROCORI schools promise change after reports of racist bullying

COLD SPRING, Minnesota (AP) Leaders of a rural school district in central Minnesota said they plan to review policies on bullying and discipline following reports that students of color have been the target of racist harassment.

Andrea Robinson says her black children have repeatedly been the target of racist behavior in public schools in Rocori.

Robinson said they were called a racial epithet by other students and were unfairly singled out for discipline when they went on a rampage in response, Minnesota Public Radio reported.

School board president Jason Wesenberg said members will come together and develop a plan of action.

For that, I apologize to the community and the harm this has caused, Wesenberg said at a board meeting last week. But I am very optimistic and encouraged that the outcome of this event will translate into a very positive growth opportunity for our district.

Superintendent Brad Kelvington said the district will not tolerate harassment and bullying and is working to improve that.

Efforts he cited include forming a district-wide equity committee, increasing staff training and inclusive student discussions, providing support student mental health issues and a hotline where they can anonymously report bullying.

The Rocori School District has approximately 2,000 students, who come from the county towns of Stearns, Rockville, Cold Spring and Richmond. About 87% of the students in the neighborhood are white.
