Ally McCoist responds to Steve Clarke’s “harsh” criticisms of Ranger hero Graeme Souness

Ally McCoist hit back at Graeme Souness for his “harsh” criticism of Steve Clarke’s Scottish tactics.

The Scots collapsed from the Euro last night with a 3-1 loss to a chic Croatian side and Clarke suffered the backlash due to his personal choices.

Souness, speaking on STV, described Clarke’s tactics as coming from a “bygone era” and urged him to step into the 21st century.

But Coisty backed the head coach and, while not agreeing with all of his decisions, backed the choices he made – believing the country lost to the top team in Hampden last night.

“I think it’s tough,” he told talkSPORT’s Laura Woods. “I certainly wouldn’t have picked the team Steve picked for the opener, I’ve always said that. I definitely would have played two up front and then, if you win that game that was indeed our best shot at winning a game, let’s face it.

“When we didn’t get that you chase because you have to beat England or Croatia. In an ideal situation you don’t lose your first game, maybe you can pass one up front and pack the middle. We got overwhelmed in the middle of the park last night, it was a long time and I have no problem as long as it’s not done all the time.

“We have good players in the middle of the park. Particularly if Gilmour had played last night I don’t think it would have been allowed to happen in terms of long at Dykes. The problem was when we were long, which n ‘was not all the time, we had no support because there was too big a gap between the middle and the front.

“I understand his point of view, but I saw enough possession in the game against England to give me some encouragement, but last night was a disappointment.”
