Palestinian Authority arrests activist for criticizing Facebook

The Palestinian Authority arrested a prominent activist and detained him overnight after criticizing his policies in a series of online posts and accusing him of arresting another person for political reasons.

The Palestinian Authority, which has limited autonomy in parts of the Israeli-controlled West Bank, has come under heavy criticism from Palestinians in recent weeks after it called off its first election in 15 years and was widely put on the sidelines during the Gaza war that lasted 11 days last month.

Issa Amro, a vocal critic of Israel and the Palestinian Authority who has been arrested by both in the past, says he was summoned for questioning by the PA’s cybercrime unit last night.

He said he was questioned about a Facebook post in which he protested the arrest of a man linked to a political rival to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. In the message, he said the Palestinian Authority should instead arrest corrupt people within its own ranks.

Amro tells The Associated Press that he was arrested soon after and locked up overnight in a very, very dirty place that is unsuitable for humans. He appeared before prosecutors today before being released and was told to come back tomorrow when he could be charged.

Palestinian officials refuse to comment on the case.
