SINGAPORE: Home and Law Minister K Shanmugam said on Sunday (June 6) that it was “no longer so sure” that Singapore “was going in the right direction” on racial tolerance, after viral video showed a man making racist remarks towards an interracial couple.

Sharing a video on Facebook uploaded by Mr. Dave Parkash, the minister said: “I used to believe that Singapore was going in the right direction on racial tolerance and harmony. Based on events recent years, I’m not so sure anymore. “

In the video, a man in a red polo shirt can be heard telling Mr Parkash and his girlfriend to date people of their “own race”.

The man in red, who admitted to being a “Singaporean Chinese”, then added: “I have nothing against you personally, but I think it is racist for the Indian to attack a Chinese woman.” .

When Mr. Parkash called him a racist, the man in red agreed he was. In the video, Mr. Parkash said he was “half Indian, half Filipino”, while his girlfriend was “half Singaporean Chinese, half Thai”.

Police have confirmed reports have been filed and investigations are ongoing. In an update on Sunday night, police said a 60-year-old man was helping with investigations.

Mr Shanmugam said in his Facebook post that the video was sent to him and that he did not have “the full facts, just what I see in the video.”

“If this is correct, then it is horrible. It seems that more and more people find it acceptable to make racist statements ‘in the face’ – openly. And some try to explain themselves, every time something as it happens, “he added.

He said it was “completely unacceptable” and “very worrying”.
