A group of black police have accused members of its own department at the University of Washington of racism and discrimination.
The five police officers filed for damages totaling $ 8 million, alleging that they had been the victims of various racist incidents or name-calling. The officers were denied promotion because of their race, they said.

Officer Damien Taylor said a white supervisor called him “a clean nigger” on a call and then laughed at me when I confronted him about it. “
Former chef John Vinson, who is black, has also been mentioned in the claims. Officers said Vinson has been repeatedly criticized by opponents who said he hired too many minorities.
White officers called Chief Vinson the n-word on several occasions, Officer Russell Ellis said in the court file.
Officer Hamani Nowlen said he heard white officers attack George Floyd, the black man who was murdered by a Minnesota police officer on May 25, 2020. The former officer, Derek Chauvin, was convicted of his murder but awaits his conviction.
Colleagues called Floyd another dead monkey and said he got what he deserved.

A spokesperson for the university said the school was stunned by the allegations described in those allegations and that it plans to investigate the allegations, although it has no record of complaints filed through of the many avenues available to staff to do so.
We plan to open our own investigation into the allegations now that they have been brought to our attention, Victor Balta, a spokesperson for the university, said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. UW is committed to maintaining a fair, equitable and inclusive environment and provides many avenues for employees to report inappropriate or discriminatory behavior so that they can be addressed immediately. Given the nature of these allegations and pending legal claims, we have nothing further to add while legal proceedings are ongoing.

The university has up to 60 days to respond to the filing, and a lawsuit could be pending.
