The Corinthians have terminated defenseman Danilo Avelar’s contract after making a racist comment during an online match on the Counter-Strike video game.
The incident took place on Tuesday, as the 32-year-old called another player a derogatory term for Blacks in Brazil, before the Corinthians issued a statement declaring their decision.
“The Corinthians are in contact with player Danilo Avelar and his representatives to discuss and formalize the appropriate measures to terminate the player’s contract,” the club’s statement read.
Avelar has been the subject of much criticism on social media, as Corinthians fans have asked the club’s hierarchy to terminate his contract, which was due to expire in December 2022.
The defender issued a statement on Wednesday apologizing for his actions.
“In one of the matches, I was offended by a foreign player because he was Brazilian,” read Avelar’s statement.
“I lost my mind, but unfortunately I made the situation worse: I made a serious mistake in writing a racist sentence to an opponent. I was wrong, I made a mistake and I am deeply ashamed of it.
“In our society we must abolish all forms of racism. I would like to say how sorry I am, without exception, but especially to the Afro-descendant community.”
Arrived at the club in 2019
The Corinthians have decided to terminate the contract of Avelar, who had played for Schalke, Cagliari, Turin and Amiens before joining the club.
“The Corinthians reaffirm that they condemn any form of racist connotation, in accordance with the history of the club for the defense of equality and democracy,” the club’s statement continued.
