VANCOUVER – A school district on Vancouver Island said several of its schools had been the target of racist graffiti in recent weeks.
The Cowichan Valley School District says the incidents began on May 12 and have increased in frequency since then.
Each has been reported to the local RCMP, which is investigating, the school district said in a press release Thursday.
The schools targeted by racist graffiti are:
May 12: Discovery Elementary School in Shawnigan Lake June 6: Frances Kelsey High School in Mill Bay (first incident) June 13: Frances Kelsey High School (second incident) June 22: Mount Prevost School in Duncan June 23: Cowichan High School in Duncan
The school district is asking anyone who witnessed the incidents or had information about them to contact the RCMP. Advice on Discovery Elementary and Frances Kelsey should be provided to the Lake Cowichan RCMP at 250-743-5514, while advice on other schools should be provided to the North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
We are working closely with our RCMP partners to find out who is responsible for this wrongdoing, ”Candace Spilsbury, Chair of the Cowichan Valley School District Education Council, said in the statement.
“We know that, unfortunately, racism is alive and well in our communities,” Spilsbury added. “We rely on members of our communities to provide any information that can help us find those who continue to target our students, staff and community through these racist messages.”
The school district did not specify the content of the messages in the graffiti or indicate the groups targeted by the racist messages.
“The school board would like to thank the RCMP for their diligence in these investigations, as well as the district operations staff who responded quickly to these incidents and repainted the graffiti,” the district said in its statement.
