Power surge blamed for Potter Center fire

JACKSON, MI – A power surge is blamed on a late-night fire Thursday at the George E. Potter Center at Jackson College, officials said.

At around 5:30 p.m. on June 24, one of the building’s three transformers caught fire, causing a few open flames and a horrible smell throughout the building, Jackson College senior vice president Cindy Allen said. The Transformer is located on the fourth floor of the Potter Center.

On Friday, June 25, electricians discovered that a second transformer, located near the Michael Baughman Theater, was also damaged by the surge, Allen said.

We have electricians here looking at and checking all of our transformers in all of our buildings because it’s just not safe right now to just turn things back on, Allen said.

Jackson College closed its campus on Friday, but is set to reopen on Monday, June 28, pending restoration work to rectify the water damage left behind when the flames were extinguished.

No one was injured in the blaze and around 13 students were transferred to another part of campus due to a power outage, Allen said.

Several fire departments responded quickly to the scene and brought the blaze under control, Allen said. They include the Summit Township Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department, Liberty Township Fire Department, Spring Arbor Township Fire Department, and Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Department. .
