Bijnor: Horse-bargaining allegations and counter-allegations are flying en masse in Bijnor as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) race to win the district panchayat presidential ballot. On Saturday, former district panchayat president Sakendra Pratap Singh filled in the nomination as the BJP candidate while the SP introduced Charanjeet Kaur. In total, there are 56 elected members of the district panchayat, including the SP and its alliance Rashtriya Lok Dal and Bharatiya Kisan Union – have 20 members. The BJP has only eight and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) six, but they have already shown allegiance to the BJP. Now, the remaining 22 members are independents and supporters of the Bhim army and are aggressively courted by these two parties. BJP candidate Sakendra Pratap Singh applied in the presence of Minister of State Ashok Katariya, former Member of Parliament (MP) Bhartendra Singh and District President Subhash Valmiki. Although the BJP won only eight seats, Singh claimed there were 32 members of the district panchayat in his camp. On the other hand, Charanjeet Kaur claimed that his party had the strength to win the presidential post. Nagina assembly seat SP deputy Manoj Paras said, “Everyone knows the BJP lost the ballot for district panchayat members in the state. But now he wants to win the post of president on the basis of hooliganism. The administration and the police work as workers of the BJP. District panchayat members are intimidated. They use all means to win the ballot. We sent a memorandum to the President of India and demanded that the ballot be conducted fairly and without fear. The BSP appears to be marginalized in the polls. According to a BSP leader who declined to be appointed, the party was unable to secure the post of president. He therefore did not present any candidate. Speaking to TOI, BSP district chairman in Bijnor Jitendra Sagar said, “There are no directives regarding the post of chairman of the district panchayat from the party high command. We are not participating in this survey but we are galvanizing our outfit. We will follow the instructions that our party president will give in the coming days. The vote is scheduled for July 3. In the Amroha border region, BJP candidate Lalit Tanwar submitted his candidacy on Saturday. He is the son of former MP Kanwar Singh Tanwar. He almost won the post of district panchayat president because the candidacy of the other candidate, MS Sakina Begam, was rejected due to inconsistencies in his candidacy documents. Sakina Begam is the wife of six-time MP for Amroha and former cabinet minister Mahmood Ali. Ali is the veteran SP leader in Amroha. Disappointed by the rejection of his wife’s appointment, Ali said: “This is murder against democracy.
